Mitsubishi PLC Generations: FX3U vs. iQ-R vs. iQ-F – Which Parts Can You Still Get?

Mitsubishi has been a dominant force in Asian and European automation markets for decades. If you're running a packaging line, CNC machine, or injection molding system built by a Japanese or Korean OEM, there's a good chance you have Mitsubishi PLCs.

The challenge is that Mitsubishi's product generations have different availability profiles, and understanding which generation you're running matters for your spare parts strategy.

The FX Series: The Compact Workhorse

The FX series has been Mitsubishi's go-to compact PLC for decades. Multiple generations exist in the field today:

FX1N / FX2N

Supply Declining

These are the oldest FX controllers still commonly found in production equipment. Released in the late 1990s and early 2000s, they're still running reliably in countless machines, but Mitsubishi discontinued manufacturing years ago.

Parts availability: OEM channels are depleted. Surplus market is the primary source. Finding FX2N-48MR or FX2N-80MT units requires specialized suppliers with global sourcing capability.

Key consideration: Program memory uses EEPROM or battery-backed RAM. If you're pulling these from a decommissioned machine, verify the program can be extracted before the battery dies.

FX3U / FX3G

Current Legacy

The FX3U series was the workhorse from the mid-2000s through the mid-2010s. Huge installed base, widely available programming resources, and still Mitsubishi's recommended platform for maintaining older systems.

Parts availability: Mixed. Some modules are still available through distribution. Others (especially special function modules) are becoming scarce. Surplus inventory is healthy but will decline over the next few years.

Key consideration: FX3U and FX3G have different expansion capabilities. FX3U supports more special function modules and higher I/O counts. Verify which variant you have before ordering parts.

FX5U

Current Product

Mitsubishi's current compact PLC offering. Backward compatible with FX3U in many applications but with different hardware architecture. If you're considering an upgrade path from FX3U, FX5U is the natural successor.

The Q Series: Midrange Performance

Between the compact FX series and the high-end iQ-R sits the Q series—Mitsubishi's midrange platform.

Q Series (QnA, QnAS, QnH)

Mixed Availability

The Q series has been through multiple generations. QnA is the oldest (effectively obsolete), QnAS added CPU speed improvements, and QnH/QnPH brought high-speed processing and redundancy options.

Parts availability: Varies by specific model. Q series CPUs and basic I/O are still available through surplus channels. Specialized modules (motion control, high-speed counters) are getting harder to find.

Key consideration: Q series uses QnH or QnPH base units, and mixing CPU generations with incompatible base units creates problems. Verify compatibility before ordering replacement CPUs.

What to Stock for Your Mitsubishi Systems

Platform Priority Spares Supply Outlook
FX1N/FX2N CPU unit, power supply module Declining—stock now
FX3U/FX3G CPU, common I/O, special function modules Available but narrowing
Q Series CPU, power supply, communication modules Model-dependent
iQ-R/iQ-F Standard spares through distribution Current availability

GX Works2 vs. GX Works3: The Software Factor

Don't overlook software compatibility. GX Works2 programs FX3U, Q series, and older platforms. GX Works3 is required for FX5U, iQ-R, and iQ-F. Make sure you have the correct software version and a valid license for your installed systems.

Trying to recover from a hardware failure while also fighting software licensing issues doubles your downtime.

What we stock: FX2N/FX3U main units and expansion modules • Q series CPUs, base units, and I/O • HMI panels (GOT1000, GOT2000 series) • Servo drives and motors (MR-J2S, MR-J3, MR-J4 series)
